Westonbury Mill Water Gardens

This garden, located near the chocolate box village of Pembridge, about 12 miles south of the Dick Turpin Cottage, is a true labour of love, created in just 18 years by Richard Pim in his retirement, and honoured in 2016 with a visit from the BBC Gardeners’ World programme:

Wilstone

The “display gardens” at Wilstone are based in the grounds of an 18th Century Manor House in an area of “Outstanding Natural Beauty” in the heart of the Shropshire Hills (as is the Dick Turpin Cottage!)

The gardens here offer a backdrop for the unusual and sought-after local hand-made ironware and stoneware products.

Hergest Gardens

Only about 10 miles south of the cottage, you will find Hergest Gardens. According to local guide, Tony Webb: “It’s an outstanding mature garden with a massive range of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants etc well labelled. The vision of the generations of gardeners who have created and maintained this garden over the centuries is amazing.”

Stockton Bury Gardens

One Google reviewer, Lynn Fogarty, has this to say about Stockton Bury: “What a hidden gem. I am not into gardens yet l couldn’t help but be moved by the beauty of this place. The food in the cafe was excellent.” The gardens do close for the season in late September each year.

On 4^th – 6^th November we had the “Fields, Farming and Food Festival”:

– which took place at nearby Newcastle on Clun. It was a veritable celebration of local food and drink, together with demonstrations and activities relating to farming, the countryside and local arts and crafts. There were demonstrations of spinning and weaving, apple pressing, a foraging walk, a bonfire party in the evening – not to mention a whole host of local produce – cider, perry, meats, vegetables and locally-made artisan breads.

Also this month on 26^th is the enchanting Ludlow Medieval Christmas Fayre. Held in the grounds of Ludlow Castle right in the centre of this picturesque town, the fayre has a truly atmospheric backdrop.

Carol singing, performers roaming all around the castle grounds, puppetry, falconry and sword-fighting – it’s all happening! This year for the first time the festival is playing host to Tryzna, a Medieval music and dance group all the way from Poland and the Ukraine. Of course, no winter festival would be complete without a range of food, drink and gift stalls, and this one is no exception. Local food and drink is well-represented, as you would expect in a gastronomic mecca like Ludlow. You can also take the chance to get a whole load of your Christmas shopping out of the way in one fell swoop by taking your pick from a plethora of innovative and ethical local products that will surely make great gifts.

So the weather may be cold, but November is a warm and welcoming time in the Shropshire Hills, with loads of events and activities to enjoy. Autumn is a breathtakingly beautiful time of year in the Shropshire hills. Woodland takes on an infinite variety of vibrant colours as the leaves turn in reaction to the change in the season. Hillside vistas take on an atmospheric identity as the paler sun pushes through the morning mist.

Pictured in an autumnal setting is the historic pack horse bridge over the river Clun. Despite its age of more than 550 years, the bridge is today still a key crossing point for the A488, linking the two halves of our lovely little town.

Dick Turpin Cottage, just outside Clun, is a great place to come and relax in comfort whilst soaking up the magical, misty, time-steeped ambience of autumn in Shropshire. We hope to welcome you soon.
